THE PROBLEM
Figure A: Stepping works for some enemies, just not the magician,
Issue Identified In recent playtesting sessions, an issue was identified with the magician boss's AI behavior. The character, designed to specialize in ranged attacks, was observed to repetitively backpedal in a manner that detracted from its characterization as a master of magic (Figure A). This mechanical maneuver was perceived as neither strategic nor befitting a formidable opponent.
THE SOLUTION
Figure B: Now you see him, now you don't.
To address this, the development team introduced a teleportation ability for the magician boss (Figure B). This adjustment effectively removed the inelegant movement pattern and augmented the character's mystique and tactical unpredictability. The magician now teleports to predetermined positions within the combat arena when the player gets too close, reinforcing its ranged attack strategy and adding a layer of complexity to the gameplay.
To maintain gameplay balance, this ability is regulated by a cooldown timer and a probability algorithm, preventing overuse and ensuring that the boss's teleportation is not guaranteed. This introduces a strategic element for players, who must now anticipate the magician's repositioning and adjust their approach accordingly.
The update aims to align each game mechanic with the overarching narrative and player expectations, enhancing the sense of immersion and ensuring that the game's interactive components contribute meaningfully to the overall experience.
